Will you lose your voice to AI?
Did you enjoy writing assignments? Some students may say they enjoy writing, but most likely do not. It can be long and tedious, requiring a lot of research and thought. There are also rubrics to follow for good writing, making it cumbersome.
Many students write to get through school, using tools such as Google, Cliff Notes, or Grammarly to help research topics, read books quickly, and check for grammar errors. These tools make writing a pain.
However, a new tool has arrived: ChatGPT, an Artificial Intelligence trained to produce text that can sound like a real person. With ChatGPT and other AI writers like Jasper or Notion AI, you can generate written content in seconds.
This is great for those who want to finish writing tasks quickly. AI can produce emails, essays, forum posts, blog posts, comments, etc. It can process information, generate original text, and answer questions accurately.
But what’s at stake?
With AI generating content, humans are left to edit the text it produces. They take someone else’s words and tweak them to sound like their own. When people write without AI, they produce their own coherent thought. They draw on culture and context to express themselves in a language many understand. Writing with their own voice gives them more control over what they want to express.
Writing tasks are more than just assignments to get through. They are an opportunity to build skills to express thoughts and beliefs and learn who you are. If the trend continues, fewer people will take the time to figure out who they are and learn how to express themselves. They may rely heavily on AI to produce thoughts they tweak. In a way, machines could take over the thinking process, influencing the content people produce.
Will you let AI take away your voice?
